Martide’s partners are seeking skilled maritime professionals to fill various ranks and positions aboard tugboats. Crew members are responsible for operating towing equipment, maintaining vessel stability, and ensuring safe navigation and operational efficiency. Positions are available in deck, engine, and bridge departments, each contributing to the safe, efficient, and timely execution of towing and support operations.
Key Responsibilities and Duties (varies by role and rank):
Deck Crew (Able Seafarers, Deckhands, Bosun, Tug Assistants)
- Handle towlines, hawsers, and mooring lines during towing, berthing, and unberthing operations.
- Support towing and push-pull maneuvers, ensuring proper connection and secure handling of towlines.
- Operate deck equipment, such as winches, capstans, and towing hooks.
- Conduct pre-tow inspections and ensure all mooring lines, wires, and towing gear are in good condition.
- Assist in vessel berthing, docking, and anchoring operations for large ships, barges, and offshore structures.
- Perform deck maintenance, including cleaning, rust removal, painting, and repair of essential equipment.
- Participate in emergency response drills, including man-overboard, firefighting, and abandon-ship procedures.
Engineering Crew (Wipers, Motormen, Engineers, Chief Engineer)
- Operate, maintain, and repair ship propulsion, power generation, and auxiliary machinery.
- Monitor and support the operation of engines, thrusters, hydraulic winches, and towing gear.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical system failures to avoid downtime.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on critical shipboard systems, such as generators, air compressors, and fuel systems.
- Ensure compliance with MARPOL regulations on bilge water discharge, emissions, and waste management.
- Maintain and manage the ship's inventory of spare parts, tools, and emergency repair equipment.
Bridge Crew (Watch Officers, 2nd Officer, Chief Officer, Captain/Master)
- Oversee navigation, voyage planning, and watchkeeping to ensure safe passage and operational readiness.
- Supervise towing operations, including securing towlines and coordinating with larger ships, pilots, and port authorities.
- Conduct risk assessments, safety briefings, and emergency response drills to ensure safe towing operations.
- Monitor weather, tidal changes, and sea conditions to adjust tugboat positioning and towing operations.
- Ensure compliance with ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, and the ship’s safety management system (SMS).
- Coordinate port entry, pilot boarding, and departure operations with port authorities and vessel masters.
- Oversee vessel security, access control, and compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
General Responsibilities (All Ranks and Positions)
- Follow all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols, particularly for working with towing equipment and high-tension lines.
- Participate in emergency response drills, including firefighting, man-overboard, and evacuation procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and safe working conditions in crew quarters, workspaces, and operational areas.
- Handle the physical and mental demands of working on a tugboat, including working in tight spaces and during rough weather.
- Comply with maritime regulations, such as ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, and ISPS, to ensure operational safety and security.
- Foster teamwork, accountability, and professionalism to ensure the safe and smooth operation of towing and support operations.
