Martide’s partners are seeking experienced and detail-oriented Touch Officers to join their deck teams aboard various cargo ships and tankers. The Touch Officer plays a key role in supporting vessel operations, overseeing the handling, stowage, and discharge of cargo. This position is essential for ensuring cargo is loaded, stored, and discharged safely, efficiently, and in compliance with cargo handling plans and maritime regulations. The Touch Officer works closely with the Chief Officer, stevedores, and shore-based teams to manage cargo operations at port and during voyages.
Key responsibilities generally include:
- Cargo Handling Oversight: Supervise the loading, unloading, and stowage of cargo to ensure it is properly handled and secured according to cargo plans and operational requirements.
- Stowage Planning & Coordination: Assist in planning and organizing the stowage of cargo, ensuring efficient space utilization while maintaining vessel stability and safety.
- Cargo Condition Monitoring: Inspect cargo during loading and unloading to ensure it is free from damage, properly labeled, and handled with care, reporting any issues to senior officers.
- Compliance with Maritime Regulations: Ensure cargo operations comply with international maritime regulations (e.g., SOLAS, IMDG Code) as well as company and port authority standards.
- Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance: Promote a safety-first culture, ensuring cargo handling operations are conducted in accordance with shipboard health, safety, and environmental policies.
- Cargo Damage Reporting: Identify and report any cargo damage or discrepancies, supporting the preparation of cargo claims and incident reports.
- Communication & Liaison: Serve as a point of contact between ship officers, stevedores, and port authorities to ensure clear communication and efficient cargo handling operations.
- Cargo Documentation: Support the preparation, review, and submission of cargo documentation, including cargo manifests, stowage plans, and cargo condition reports.
- Emergency Response & Support: Participate in emergency drills and support emergency response efforts, such as cargo spills or cargo-related incidents, as part of the ship’s emergency response team.
- Equipment Monitoring & Inspections: Monitor the use and condition of cargo handling equipment, such as cranes, winches, and lashing gear, ensuring it is properly maintained and fit for use.
Team Coordination & Support: Work closely with the Chief Officer, Deck Officers, and stevedores to ensure seamless cargo operations and compliance with the ship's cargo handling plan.
