Martide’s partners are seeking competent and dedicated Third Officers to join their deck teams aboard various cargo ships and tankers. As a key member of the deck department, the Third Officer is responsible for navigation watchkeeping, safety equipment oversight, and emergency preparedness. Reporting to the Chief Officer, the Third Officer plays a vital role in ensuring vessel safety, regulatory compliance, and smooth operational performance.
Key responsibilities generally include:
- Bridge Watchkeeping: Act as Officer of the Watch (OOW) during assigned shifts, ensuring safe navigation, continuous monitoring of the vessel's position, and awareness of weather, traffic, and potential hazards.
- Navigation & Route Monitoring: Assist in the planning and monitoring of the ship's passage plan, ensuring the vessel follows the safest and most efficient route.
- Emergency Preparedness & Response: Act as a key member of the ship’s emergency response team, supporting firefighting, rescue operations, and response to collision, grounding, and man-overboard incidents.
- Safety Equipment Inspection: Inspect and maintain firefighting, life-saving, and emergency equipment, ensuring all items are in working condition and ready for use in emergencies.
- Compliance with Maritime Regulations: Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations, such as SOLAS, MARPOL, and ISM Code, as well as company policies and port state control requirements.
- Logbook & Record-Keeping: Accurately record navigation activities, watchkeeping logs, safety equipment checks, and emergency drill outcomes in the ship’s logbook.
- Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance: Promote a safety-first culture by following and enforcing shipboard health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Cargo Operations Support: Assist with cargo loading, unloading, and stowage, ensuring cargo operations are conducted safely and in compliance with cargo handling plans.
- Crew Training & Mentorship: Support the training and development of junior officers, cadets, and deck crew, providing guidance on watchkeeping, navigation, and safety protocols.
- Inspection & Audit Support: Assist in port state control inspections, classification society audits, and internal compliance reviews, ensuring all required documentation and systems are in order.
- Equipment Monitoring & Maintenance: Monitor the operation and performance of navigational equipment, such as radar, ECDIS, AIS, and bridge control systems, ensuring they remain fully functional.
Team Collaboration & Coordination: Work closely with the Chief Officer, Second Officer, and Master to ensure effective communication and coordination of deck operations and navigational activities.
