Martide’s partners are seeking dedicated and motivated Senior Engine Cadets to join their engineering teams aboard research ships. This role provides an opportunity for cadets to take on increased responsibilities as they progress toward becoming fully qualified marine engineers. Senior Engine Cadets support engine room operations, assist with maintenance and repairs, and gain practical experience with shipboard machinery and technical systems. Under the supervision of senior engineers, they contribute to the smooth operation of the ship’s propulsion, power generation, and auxiliary systems.
Key responsibilities generally include:
- Engine Room Operations: Assist with the operation of main engines, auxiliary engines, generators, and propulsion systems, supporting senior engineers during watchkeeping shifts.
- Maintenance & Repairs: Support the inspection, maintenance, and repair of key engine room systems, including boilers, compressors, pumps, and HVAC equipment.
- System Monitoring & Checks: Conduct routine inspections of engine room equipment, recording performance data such as temperatures, pressures, and fluid levels, and reporting any irregularities.
- Cleaning & Upkeep of Engine Room: Support the cleaning and maintenance of the engine room, ensuring it remains clean, organized, and free from hazards.
- Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance: Follow shipboard health, safety, and environmental protocols, supporting compliance with international maritime safety standards.
- Fuel & Lubrication Systems Support: Assist in the handling, testing, and treatment of fuel and lubrication systems to maintain engine performance and reduce system wear.
- Emergency Response Support: Participate in emergency drills and support emergency responses, such as firefighting, flood control, and engine failures, as part of the emergency response team.
- Preventive Maintenance: Assist with scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, working with senior engineers to ensure all shipboard systems remain operational and efficient.
- Equipment Handling & Inventory: Assist with the use and management of tools, spare parts, and consumables, ensuring items are available for maintenance and repair tasks.
- Learning & Development: Participate in training sessions, complete practical assignments, and follow a structured cadet development program aimed at achieving certification as a marine engineer.
- Record-Keeping & Documentation: Support the maintenance of accurate records of engine room activities, maintenance logs, and inspection reports to ensure compliance with shipboard audit requirements.
Collaboration with Engineering Team: Work closely with the Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, and other senior officers to gain a deep understanding of shipboard engineering systems and procedures.
