Martide’s partners are seeking motivated and proactive Senior Deck Cadets to join their deck teams aboard research ships. This role provides an opportunity for cadets to take on increased responsibilities as they progress toward becoming fully qualified deck officers. Senior Deck Cadets assist with navigation, deck operations, cargo handling, and shipboard maintenance, while also supporting the vessel's scientific research activities. Working under the supervision of senior officers, the Senior Deck Cadet gains hands-on experience and contributes to the success of daily shipboard operations.
Key responsibilities generally include:
- Navigation & Watchkeeping: Assist with bridge watchkeeping duties, supporting the safe navigation of the vessel, monitoring radar, ECDIS, and other navigational equipment.
- Voyage Planning & Chart Corrections: Support the updating and correction of navigational charts, ensuring all publications are current and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Deck Operations: Assist with deck activities, including mooring, anchoring, and the handling of deck equipment and lines during port calls and research operations.
- Cargo & Equipment Handling: Support the loading, unloading, and securing of scientific research equipment and cargo, following safety protocols and operational procedures.
- Safety & Emergency Preparedness: Participate in emergency drills and respond to emergency situations, such as man-overboard, fire, or collision scenarios, as part of the emergency response team.
- Maintenance & Housekeeping: Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of shipboard equipment, including painting, cleaning, and basic repair tasks on deck and within communal areas.
- Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance: Follow shipboard health, safety, and environmental standards, ensuring safe working practices and supporting environmental compliance.
- Support for Scientific Operations: Assist with scientific research activities, including the deployment and retrieval of survey equipment and data collection instruments.
- Learning & Development: Participate in formal and on-the-job training as part of a structured cadet development program, working toward officer certification and competency assessments.
- Record-Keeping & Reporting: Maintain accurate logs of navigation activities, watchkeeping duties, and deck operations to support the ship’s operational and audit requirements.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with deck officers, engineers, and scientific research teams to support multi-disciplinary shipboard operations and scientific research missions.
