Martide’s partners are seeking experienced and detail-oriented Second Officers to join their deck teams aboard various merchant ships. The Second Officer plays a critical role in the ship’s navigation, safety, and operational efficiency. As a senior member of the deck team, the Second Officer is responsible for passage planning, navigational watchkeeping, and overseeing the ship’s safety equipment. Reporting to the Chief Officer, the Second Officer ensures compliance with international maritime regulations and contributes to the overall safety and security of the vessel.

Key responsibilities generally include:

• Navigation & Voyage Planning: Prepare and update the ship's passage plan, ensuring safe and efficient routes are plotted using ECDIS, charts, and other navigational aids.
• Watchkeeping Duties: Serve as Officer of the Watch (OOW) during assigned shifts, maintaining constant monitoring of navigational equipment, weather conditions, and traffic to ensure safe passage.
• Bridge Equipment Monitoring: Operate and maintain navigational equipment, including radar, GPS, ECDIS, gyrocompass, and AIS, ensuring they remain operational and accurate.
• Chart Corrections & Updates: Ensure navigational charts, publications, and digital databases are up to date and compliant with regulatory standards.
• Safety Equipment Oversight: Conduct inspections of safety, firefighting, and life-saving equipment, ensuring they are in working order and ready for use in emergency situations.
• Emergency Response Support: Act as a key member of the emergency response team, supporting drills and responding to real-time incidents, such as fire, collision, or man-overboard situations.
• Compliance with Maritime Regulations: Ensure full compliance with international maritime regulations (e.g., SOLAS, STCW, and ISM Code) as well as port state, flag state, and company policies.
• Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance: Promote a culture of safety on board, supporting shipboard adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
• Training & Mentorship: Provide guidance and on-the-job training to junior officers, deck cadets, and watchkeeping crew, supporting the development of future deck officers.
• Logbook & Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of navigational activities, watchkeeping reports, inspections, and safety drills in the ship’s official logbooks.
• Cargo Operations Support: Assist with cargo operations, including loading, stowage, and discharge, ensuring cargo handling is carried out safely and in compliance with operational procedures.
• Team Collaboration & Coordination: Work closely with the Chief Officer, Master, and engineering teams to ensure smooth operational transitions and coordination of shipboard activities.
