Martide’s partners are seeking experienced maritime professionals to fill various ranks and positions aboard sailing ships including training ships, private yachts, and historical replicas. Working on a sailing ship requires a high level of seamanship, technical skill, and physical stamina. Crew members play a vital role in sail handling, navigation, vessel maintenance, and ensuring passenger safety (where applicable). Positions are available in deck, engine, and bridge departments, with each role contributing to the safe and efficient operation of the ship.

Key Responsibilities and Duties (varies by role and rank):

Deck Crew (Able Seafarers, Deckhands, Bosun, Sail Riggers)

  • Hoist, lower, reef, furl, and maintain sails, ensuring proper sail configuration based on wind and weather conditions.
    • Handle and maintain rigging, such as halyards, sheets, shrouds, and blocks.
      • Climb masts and work aloft to inspect, repair, and maintain sails, rigging, and spars.
        • Handle mooring and unmooring operations, as well as anchoring and line handling.
          • Maintain the ship’s appearance and structural integrity by cleaning, painting, varnishing, and repairing wooden, metal, and fiberglass components.
            • Assist in passenger safety (for training and tourism voyages) during embarkation, disembarkation, and while at sea.
              • Participate in emergency response drills, including man-overboard, fire, and abandon-ship procedures.

                Engineering Crew (Wipers, Motormen, Engineers, Chief Engineer)

                • Operate, maintain, and repair ship propulsion systems, auxiliary engines, and mechanical equipment.
                  • Maintain the operation of onboard electrical, plumbing, and hydraulic systems essential for vessel operation.
                    • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic failures in auxiliary systems.
                      • Monitor and maintain the ship's power generation system, battery banks, and fuel systems (for hybrid and motor-assisted sailing ships).
                        • Conduct preventive maintenance and routine inspections on essential shipboard machinery.
                          • Ensure compliance with MARPOL regulations for bilge water, emissions, and waste management.
                            • Oversee the ship’s spare parts inventory, ensuring essential tools and repair supplies are always available.

                              Bridge Crew (Watch Officers, 2nd Officer, Chief Officer, Captain)

                              • Oversee navigation, voyage planning, and watchkeeping in compliance with international maritime regulations.
                                • Coordinate sail handling, including sail hoisting, reefing, and furling, to ensure the ship operates safely and efficiently.
                                  • Monitor weather and wind conditions to adjust sails, rigging, and navigation accordingly.
                                    • Conduct risk assessments, safety briefings, and emergency drills with the crew and passengers (when applicable).
                                      • Supervise mooring, unmooring, and anchoring operations in coordination with deck crew and port authorities.
                                        • Coordinate berthing, pilotage, and port operations where necessary.
                                          • Ensure compliance with ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, and the ship’s safety management system (SMS).
                                            • Oversee vessel security, access control, and compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.

                                              General Responsibilities (All Ranks and Positions)

                                              • Comply with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols, especially during sail handling and work at height.
                                                • Participate in emergency response drills, including firefighting, man-overboard, and abandon-ship procedures.
                                                  • Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and safe working conditions in crew quarters, workspaces, and operational areas.
                                                    • Work as part of a close-knit team to handle the physical and mental demands of working at sea for extended periods.
                                                      • Develop and demonstrate seamanship skills, especially in traditional sailing techniques, rigging, and sail handling.
                                                        • Foster teamwork, accountability, and professionalism to ensure smooth vessel operations and guest satisfaction (for training or tourist voyages).
