Martide’s partners are seeking experienced and dedicated Safety Officers to join their various vessels. This role is essential for promoting a culture of safety, ensuring compliance with international maritime regulations, and overseeing the implementation of the ship's Safety Management System (SMS). The Safety Officer is responsible for conducting safety inspections, leading emergency drills, and supporting the crew in maintaining a safe working environment.

Key responsibilities generally include:

  • Implementation of Safety Management System (SMS): Oversee the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the ship’s SMS to ensure compliance with international maritime regulations (e.g., ISM Code).
    • Safety Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of shipboard equipment, machinery, and workspaces to identify hazards, non-conformities, and areas for improvement.
      • Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification: Lead risk assessments for shipboard operations and ensure that corrective measures are implemented to reduce risks to crew, cargo, and vessel safety.
        • Emergency Response Leadership: Lead and coordinate emergency drills and exercises, including fire, collision, and man-overboard scenarios, ensuring crew preparedness and compliance with safety protocols.
          • Accident Investigation & Reporting: Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports that highlight root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
            • Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Compliance: Ensure crew compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, supporting efforts to maintain shipboard cleanliness, hygiene, and pollution prevention.
              • Crew Training & Awareness: Provide safety training and toolbox talks to crew members, ensuring they are aware of safety protocols, emergency procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
                • Fire Safety & Equipment Checks: Inspect firefighting equipment, fire detection systems, and life-saving appliances to ensure they are operational, properly stored, and ready for use.
                  • Documentation & Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, audits, risk assessments, emergency drills, and accident reports to support regulatory compliance and audit readiness.
                    • Liaison with Ship Management & Authorities: Act as the primary point of contact for safety-related issues, liaising with ship management, classification societies, and port state control authorities.
                      • Waste Management & Environmental Compliance: Oversee the implementation of MARPOL standards related to waste disposal, pollution prevention, and environmental protection on board.
                        • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Oversight: Ensure the proper use, availability, and maintenance of PPE for all crew members, providing guidance on its correct use.

                          Team Collaboration & Support: Work closely with the Master, Chief Officer, and other senior officers to support shipboard operations, ensuring that safety considerations are embedded in all daily activities.
