Positions are available in deck, engine, and bridge departments, with each role playing an essential part in supporting the ship’s research missions, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities and Duties (varies by role and rank):
Deck Crew (Able Seafarers, Deckhands, Bosun, Scientific Support Technicians)
- Assist with the deployment, retrieval, and operation of research equipment such as sampling nets, trawls, buoys, and ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles).
- Support scientific data collection and fieldwork, assisting researchers with sample handling and storage.
- Operate deck machinery, such as winches, cranes, and A-frames, for deploying and recovering research equipment.
- Conduct deck maintenance, including cleaning, rust removal, painting, and repair of essential equipment.
- Assist in mooring, unmooring, and berthing operations at research stations and ports.
- Participate in emergency response drills, including man-overboard, firefighting, and abandon-ship procedures.
- Follow health and safety protocols to support the safe handling of sensitive scientific equipment.
Engineering Crew (Wipers, Motormen, Engineers, Chief Engineer)
- Operate, maintain, and repair ship propulsion, power generation, and auxiliary systems.
- Support the operation and maintenance of specialized research equipment, including ROVs, winches, and hydrographic survey tools.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical systems to ensure the continuous operation of the vessel.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and inspections of essential machinery, such as compressors, generators, and water treatment systems.
- Ensure compliance with MARPOL regulations regarding bilge water discharge, emissions, and waste management.
- Oversee the inventory of spare parts, tools, and emergency repair supplies.
- Provide technical support for laboratory facilities and the operation of scientific equipment.
Bridge Crew (Watch Officers, 2nd Officer, Chief Officer, Captain)
- Oversee safe navigation, voyage planning, and watchkeeping in compliance with international maritime regulations.
- Coordinate with scientific teams and researchers to plan and support research activities, such as sampling, deployments, and ROV operations.
- Conduct risk assessments and safety briefings before research operations and equipment deployment.
- Supervise ballast and de-ballast operations to maintain vessel stability during research missions.
- Coordinate with port authorities, research stations, and support vessels for smooth berthing and port operations.
- Conduct emergency drills, safety briefings, and crew training in accordance with ISM, SOLAS, and MARPOL standards.
- Monitor vessel security, access control, and compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
Scientific Crew (Scientists, Researchers, Technicians, Lab Managers)
- Plan and execute scientific research activities in collaboration with the ship’s crew and bridge officers.
- Collect, label, and preserve water, biological, and sediment samples for analysis.
- Operate and maintain research equipment, including sensors, ROVs, and laboratory instruments.
- Conduct hydrographic surveys, water quality testing, and data collection for oceanographic research.
- Ensure the proper handling, storage, and transfer of scientific samples and data collected during fieldwork.
- Collaborate with crew to schedule research deployments, equipment retrieval, and sample collection activities.
- Adhere to safety protocols for the use of scientific equipment and participate in emergency response drills.
General Responsibilities (All Ranks and Positions)
- Comply with all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols, especially for working with sensitive research equipment and hazardous materials.
- Participate in emergency response drills, including firefighting, man-overboard, and abandon-ship procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and safe working conditions in crew quarters, laboratory spaces, and operational areas.
- Support the scientific mission of the vessel by assisting with research activities and ensuring equipment readiness.
- Adapt to the physical and mental demands of working at sea, often in remote or challenging environments.
- Handle equipment and research samples with precision, care, and strict adherence to protocols.\
