Martide’s partners are seeking experienced and detail-oriented Chief Observers to join their teams aboard various merchant ships. This role is essential for overseeing observation, data collection, and reporting activities on the vessel. The Chief Observer ensures that navigation, meteorological, environmental, and operational data are accurately recorded and reported to the relevant stakeholders. As a senior member of the observation team, the Chief Observer supervises junior observers, ensures compliance with maritime regulations, and supports bridge and deck operations.
Key responsibilities generally include:
- Observation & Data Collection: Oversee the collection of navigation, meteorological, oceanographic, and environmental data to support vessel operations and regulatory compliance.
- Supervision & Team Leadership: Lead and supervise the work of junior observers, ensuring accurate and timely data collection, reporting, and record-keeping.
- Compliance with Maritime Regulations: Ensure compliance with maritime regulations and reporting requirements, including environmental monitoring and emissions data.
- Weather Monitoring & Reporting: Monitor and record weather conditions, sea state, and visibility, providing essential information to support navigational decision-making.
- Bridge Support: Provide real-time support to bridge officers during navigation, ensuring data from weather instruments, ECDIS, and other observation tools are accurately relayed.
- Calibration & Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and calibration of observation tools and equipment, such as weather instruments, sensors, and data logging devices.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Analyze collected data to identify trends, anomalies, and potential hazards, providing recommendations to senior officers and technical teams.
- Record-Keeping & Documentation: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all observation data, ensuring compliance with the ship’s operational and audit requirements.
- Emergency Response Support: Participate in emergency drills and respond to emergency situations, supporting operational decision-making through data analysis and environmental assessment.
- Environmental Monitoring & Compliance: Monitor ballast water discharge, fuel consumption, and emissions to ensure compliance with MARPOL and other international environmental regulations.
- Training & Mentorship: Provide guidance and training to junior observers, supporting skill development and ensuring high-quality observation standards are maintained.
- Collaboration & Coordination: Work closely with deck officers, navigators, and ship management to provide critical observation data that supports safe and efficient vessel operations.
