Martide’s partners are seeking experienced and detail-oriented Navigator Shift Leads to join their bridge teams aboard various merchant ships. This senior role is critical for overseeing navigation activities during assigned shifts, ensuring the vessel follows its planned route safely and efficiently. The Navigator Shift Lead is responsible for supervising watchkeeping officers, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, and supporting the Master and Chief Officer in all navigation-related tasks.

Key responsibilities generally include:

  • Shift Supervision & Leadership: Lead the bridge team during assigned shifts, ensuring the safe navigation and maneuvering of the vessel in accordance with maritime regulations.
    • Navigation & Route Monitoring: Oversee real-time monitoring of the ship's position, route, speed, and heading, making necessary course adjustments to avoid hazards and maintain safe passage.
      • Watchkeeping Oversight: Supervise watchkeeping officers, ensuring continuous observation of navigational instruments and external conditions, including weather, traffic, and obstacles.
        • Risk Assessment & Collision Avoidance: Lead collision avoidance strategies, monitoring vessel traffic and environmental conditions to mitigate navigational risks.
          • Bridge Equipment Management: Ensure the proper use, operation, and maintenance of bridge equipment such as radar, ECDIS, GPS, gyrocompass, and AIS systems.
            • Chart & Publications Management: Oversee the correction and updating of electronic and paper charts, ensuring compliance with company policies and maritime regulatory requirements.
              • Emergency Response Leadership: Serve as the lead response officer during emergency situations, such as man-overboard, collision, and grounding incidents, ensuring proper protocols are followed.
                • Logbook & Record-Keeping: Ensure accurate documentation of navigation activities, incident reports, and voyage deviations, supporting compliance with regulatory requirements.
                  • Compliance with Maritime Regulations: Ensure full compliance with international maritime regulations (SOLAS, COLREGs, and ISM Code), port state control requirements, and company policies.
                    • Training & Mentorship: Provide guidance, mentorship, and training to watchkeeping officers and junior deck crew, supporting professional development and operational excellence.
                      • Communication & Reporting: Coordinate with Vessel Traffic Services (VTS), port authorities, and pilot stations to support safe navigation, port entry, and departure.

                        Team Collaboration: Work closely with the Master, Chief Officer, and bridge team to ensure smooth operational transitions between shifts and seamless coordination of bridge activities.
