Martide’s partners are seeking experienced and technically skilled Chief Mechanics to lead the mechanical maintenance and repair team aboard their cargo ships and tankers. This role is critical to ensuring the operational readiness, safety, and reliability of all mechanical systems, including engines, pumps, compressors, and hydraulic equipment. As a senior member of the engineering department, the Chief Mechanic works closely with the Chief Engineer and other officers to support vessel performance and regulatory compliance.
Key responsibilities generally include:
- Mechanical System Maintenance & Repairs: Oversee the maintenance, inspection, and repair of main engines, auxiliary engines, generators, pumps, compressors, and other essential mechanical systems.
- Equipment Troubleshooting: Diagnose mechanical faults and malfunctions, leading timely repairs to minimize vessel downtime and ensure continuous operation.
- Preventive Maintenance Oversight: Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules, ensuring all machinery is regularly serviced and operational at peak performance.
- Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems: Oversee the maintenance, inspection, and repair of hydraulic and pneumatic systems used in cargo operations, mooring, and engine room systems.
- Spare Parts & Inventory Management: Manage the availability of spare parts, tools, and consumables required for mechanical system maintenance, ensuring timely procurement and stock control.
- Team Leadership & Supervision: Lead and supervise the work of mechanical crew members, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure the completion of tasks to high standards.
- Compliance with Safety & Environmental Standards: Ensure all maintenance and repair work adheres to health, safety, and environmental regulations, supporting compliance with international maritime standards.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed records of all maintenance, repair, and inspection activities, ensuring compliance with the ship’s planned maintenance system (PMS) and audit requirements.
- Emergency Response Support: Respond to emergency situations, such as engine room malfunctions or system failures, ensuring quick and effective action to safeguard crew and vessel safety.
- Collaboration with Ship Officers: Work closely with the Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, and other senior officers to support vessel operations and address technical challenges.
Audit & Inspection Support: Prepare for and support vessel audits and inspections, ensuring all mechanical systems and documentation are in compliance with regulatory standards.
