Crew members play a vital role in ensuring animal welfare, maintaining vessel cleanliness, and managing the safe loading, care, and discharge of livestock. Positions are available in deck, engine, and bridge departments, with each role contributing to the safe, efficient, and humane transportation of animals. Key Responsibilities and Duties (varies by role and rank):
Deck Crew (Able Seafarers, Deckhands, Bosun, Livestock Handlers)
- Assist with the loading and discharge of livestock, ensuring animals are handled safely and humanely.
- Maintain animal welfare during the voyage by monitoring feed, water, and ventilation systems.
- Clean and maintain animal pens, passageways, and water troughs to ensure a hygienic environment.
- Monitor animal health and well-being, reporting any signs of distress or illness to senior crew or veterinary staff.
- Support vessel mooring, unmooring, and berthing operations at ports.
- Carry out routine deck maintenance, including cleaning, painting, and equipment repair.
- Follow health, safety, and environmental protocols, including animal welfare standards.
- Participate in emergency response drills, including rescue procedures for animals and crew.
Engineering Crew (Wipers, Motormen, Engineers, Chief Engineer)
- Operate, maintain, and repair the ship's propulsion, power generation, and auxiliary systems.
- Support the operation and maintenance of ventilation, water supply, and feeding systems for the livestock.
- Monitor and maintain climate control systems to ensure proper temperature, humidity, and ventilation for the animals.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic failures to avoid disruptions in cargo care.
- Ensure compliance with MARPOL regulations regarding waste disposal, bilge water discharge, and emissions control.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on machinery critical to animal welfare, such as ventilation and water supply systems.
- Manage the ship's inventory of spare parts, tools, and emergency repair equipment.
Bridge Crew (Watch Officers, 2nd Officer, Chief Officer, Captain)
- Oversee the safe navigation, voyage planning, and watchkeeping in compliance with maritime regulations.
- Supervise livestock loading, stowage, and discharge operations to ensure safe handling and animal welfare.
- Plan and manage ballasting and de-ballasting operations to maintain vessel stability during livestock transportation.
- Coordinate with veterinary teams, livestock handlers, and port authorities to ensure compliance with health and welfare regulations.
- Oversee the inspection of livestock areas to ensure the cleanliness, ventilation, and comfort of animals.
- Conduct risk assessments, safety briefings, and emergency response drills related to crew and animal safety.
- Ensure compliance with ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, and the ship's safety management system (SMS).
- Monitor vessel security and access control in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
General Responsibilities (All Ranks and Positions)
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) protocols, with a focus on animal welfare and hygiene.
- Participate in emergency response drills, including firefighting, man-overboard, and animal rescue procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and safe working conditions in crew living quarters, working spaces, and livestock areas.
- Handle the physical and mental demands of working with live animals on long voyages in challenging weather conditions.
- Comply with livestock welfare regulations, maritime security requirements, and company safety standards.
- Work as part of a team to ensure smooth shipboard operations, animal welfare, and crew safety.
