Martide’s partners are seeking dedicated and detail-oriented Garbage/Waste Disposal Operators to join their environmental services teams aboard cruise and passenger ships. This role is essential in maintaining the vessel's cleanliness, hygiene, and environmental compliance by managing waste collection, segregation, processing, and disposal. The Garbage/Waste Disposal Operator ensures all waste handling is carried out safely, efficiently, and in accordance with international maritime regulations and environmental standards.
Key responsibilities generally include:
- Waste Collection & Segregation: Collect and sort garbage from various shipboard areas, including passenger, crew, and operational zones, ensuring proper segregation of recyclable, hazardous, and general waste.
- Waste Processing: Operate and maintain waste processing equipment, such as shredders, compactors, incinerators, and glass crushers, following established operating procedures and safety guidelines.
- Compliance & Environmental Regulations: Ensure all waste disposal activities comply with international maritime environmental regulations (such as MARPOL) and the ship's waste management policies.
- Recycling & Sustainability: Assist in the ship's recycling initiatives by correctly processing recyclable materials and minimizing overall waste production.
- Safety & Hygiene Standards: Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic work environment, ensuring waste handling areas are properly sanitized and free from hazards.
- Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance on waste disposal machinery to ensure all equipment is in working order, reporting malfunctions to senior officers as required.
- Documentation & Reporting: Accurately record waste processing activities, including waste volumes, recycling data, and hazardous waste transfers, to support regulatory compliance and shipboard audits.
- Emergency Response: Participate in emergency drills and respond to real-time emergencies, such as waste system malfunctions or pollution incidents, as directed by senior officers.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with the environmental officer, housekeeping teams, and shipboard engineers to ensure smooth waste disposal operations and compliance with ship protocols.
